Innovative Ground Power Unit

AXA Power's new AXA Power Coil is a power unit that combines all the previously disparate components of a traditional ground power system into a single state-of-the-art unit.

The AXA Power Coil comprises all components from the 400 Hz ground power unit, the conventional cable coil, the interconnection cables and the aircraft cable. The system is housed in one single unit comprising a 90 kVA solid-state converter and a frequency controlled electro-mechanical chain driven cable drum. The drum is able to coil the aircraft cable in and out automatically without help from the operator. The frequency drive provides smooth rpm ramping and less mechanical stress. The power transmission from the fixed to the moving parts is accomplished with special twisted highly flexible power cables, which has eliminated the need for slip rings.

Access to the unit is only required from top/bottom and front/rear, which means that additional systems can be placed side by side, thus minimizing space requirement. This means an average of 30–40% space and weight savings compared with a separate GPU and cable coil. It also offers superior protection and handling of aircraft and ease of maintenance.
