First Complete Mobile Imaging Solution for the Operating Room

Strengthening its presence in the UK and European medical market, Planar Systems, Inc. has announced a new digital imaging solution to improve patient care in the operating room (OR). Planar's new Dome Surgery Review Cart family solves application challenges particular to the OR, including space limitations, sub-optimal lighting conditions, while offering hospitals a cost effective way to improve diagnosis, archive images and enhance communications.

As hospitals deploy PACS and RIS systems to manage patient record handling, the need for diagnostic imaging and on-demand access to prior studies continues to increase. With Planar's new Dome Surgery Review Cart family hospitals can significantly increase the speed of procedures and diagnosis, while reducing costs and delays associated with losing and printing films.

"We're seeing a tremendous growth rate in the PACS market, thanks to the benefits that digital imaging has brought to the healthcare enterprise," said Antonio Garcia, medical imaging industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "We expect to see PACS grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10% over the next seven years, with digital imaging reaching areas that have been impractical before, like the OR."

Available in different configurations, including color and grayscale options, Planar's new Dome Surgery Review Cart family en- ables referral and diagnostic viewing of imaging modalities including X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), nuclear and ultrasound in an easy-to-clean, all-in-one solution. All configurations of the solution come as dual-headed (two side-by-side monitors) systems and include Planar's Dome CXtra software, which ensures that image quality on Planar displays conforms to
DICOM standards. Dome CXtra also reduces the total cost of ownership through its enterprise management capabilities, allowing administrators and IT staff to easily monitor display performance and calibration from a central location using industry-standard interfaces.

On-site assembly of the Dome Surgery Review Cart is a simple, five-minute procedure. The system comes with a Dome video card, an easy-to-clean cart that holds cables inside to maintain cleanliness, a sealed keyboard and a mounting bracket that holds a mini-tower CPU securely to the cart. Hospitals have the flexibility to utilize a PC brand of their choice and connect to the network either by wire or wirelessly.

"Planar is listening to the needs of our healthcare customers who must continually improve patient care and operating efficiency," said Douglas K. Barnes, Vice President Sales and Marketing Europe of Planar. "This is a breakthrough technology platform that will make the jobs of hospital clinicians, CIOs and PACS administrators easier while helping them improve service to patients and avoid significant costs in remodeling and schedule disruption."

Planar's new Dome Surgery Review Cart family joins a robust, proven, product line designed to address different needs within the European hospital ecosystem: The Dome by Planar CX2 offers radiologists with a crystal clear view for diagnostic analysis; the Dome by Planar Qx2 greyscale display is designed for medical referral use; and the Px Clinical colour displays are perfect patient consultation.

With this announcement, Planar reaffirms its commitment to and investment in the European market. Looking to 2005, Planar will continue to offer new products and solutions designed specifically for the European medical community, as well as build out its portfolio of offerings in the European retail and industrial markets.

The Dome Surgery Review Cart was showcased at Medica, is available in the market.
