World first: combined pressure-temperature sensor with front diameter of only 2,5 mm

Kistler continues to push back the frontiers for the miniaturization of its sensors. The latest record-breaking innovation comes with the development of the world's smallest combined pressure-temperature sensor for plastic injection molding. This new combined sensor with a front diameter of only 2,5 mm is being marketed by Kistler as Type 6189A... .

At the heart of the new sensor lies a three-component quartz package with a sensitivity of 6,5 pC/bar and an external diameter of only 2 mm. Two Type K thermal element wires with a diameter of 8/100 mm are led through the center of this package and welded to the front of the sensor. The new sensor has a measuring range of 0 ... 2 000 bar, respectively 0 ... 200 °C, as well as a miniaturized plug that can easily be changed if the connecting cable is damaged.

The new Typ 6189A... with 2,5 mm front diameter complements the Type 6190A... with a front diameter of 4 mm which has been available for a number of years now. Over the last decade, Kistler has succeeded in reducing the diameter of its plastic processing pressure sensors progressively from 12 mm to 6 mm, 4 mm, 2,5 mm and 1 mm.

The development of the new sensor is Kistler's response to the demand from the plastic processing industry, with its ever-increasing quality assurance requirements for precision and reliability of parts serving for example as safety components for ABS, air bags and the like in the automobile industry. The only solution in respect of control requirements and economic efficiency is the integration of quality assurance directly in the production process. In addition, with injection molding, the main concern is with the changes of temperature and pressure inside the mold.

As molded parts are also becoming ever smaller and at the same time incorporating more functions, they now require yet smaller sensors to detect cavity pressure and temperature. Whereas the focus was initially on the miniaturization of the pressure sensor, the detection of the molded part temperature has come increasingly to the forefront over recent years. With the Type 6189A... the plastics industry now has a sensor that permits an efficient built-in quality assurance and thus zero-defect production, even for the smallest molded parts.
