First communication module with 164 I/Os

Numatics GmbH, one of the leading specialists in pneumatic valves and accessories, has significantly refined its G 2000 valves series in electronics by equipping it with a completely new communication module. The company now is the first manufacturer world-wide offering valves that can be combined with a communication module with a total of more than 164 I/Os. Comparing this to the previous model it means a capacity increase of almost 100 per cent. This is an improvement that yields significant advantages, especially with regards to installation and repair.

Communication modules are an important part of modern pneumatic applications. They significantly simplify the transmission of signals and are thus much more economic than conventional wiring. They determine for example, via inputs, if a cylinder is extended or returned, thus successive operational stages can be accurately controlled. It is only when the exact defined position has been reached, that the next step – such as closing a gripper – can take place. At the same time, communication modules control valves via outputs, i. e. they transmit the information how compressed air is to flow. Whereas several communication modules have been required in a complex plant for these tasks up to now, the new Numatics development now makes it possible to manage – depending on the situation - with one or with significantly less "switch stations".

The high amount of inputs and outputs makes it possible to connect significantly more sensors, actuators and valves than normally required for the pneumatic operation of a plant. Additionally, further "units" such as hydraulic or electric components can thus be controlled with the new Numatics communication module.

Further advantages are the system's short-circuit protection and diagnosis capability. Formerly, a complete valve manifold could break down by a short circuit of a single wire. Now, with the new communication module, this affects only the respective connection. In this case, it is not only that the other parts of the plant continue to run without any trouble, but also trouble shooting is much easier, faster and saves a lot of cost. This is due to the bus system's diagnostics feature. It automatically recognises any damage, such as short circuits and broken wires in the valves section or short circuits at inputs and outputs – and indicates them. A complicated and time-consuming search is no longer necessary.

Communication modules are used as central interfaces in bus systems. It is their task to transmit the information necessary for controlling a plant, to sensors, cylinders and valve manifolds. In contrast to the former complicated wiring system, today, all "commands" run via small cable with only a few leads. This yields various advantages for installation: The electric plug-in connections to the communication module are identical, and shorten the time of installation and commissioning of machines and plant. At the same time, repair work can be effected much faster due to the easy exchange of components.
