Fibre Optic Security Against Fire

After the 1999 fire disaster, the Austrian Tauerntunnel was equipped with a state-of-the-art fire protection system. The new fire dampers are controlled by 126 eks fibre optic systems LCON-R. The refurbishment also included the installation of a smoke suction system. In order to guarantee smooth operation of these significant control drives, 126 LCON-R systems were implemented to perform the data conversion from copper to fibre optics. The modern smoke suction system facilitates the site-directed suction of smoke and heat directly on top of a fire source within a minute. In the same time all other louvers in the channel are closed. The installation of 4 m² sized exhaust air louvers at intervals of 48 m, resulted in an increase of the suction performance in case of fire by a quarter. After the refurbishment the tunnel is now highly rated for safety.
