IP @SS components include:

• An advanced, automated full page scanner
• A biometric reader
• (several technologies available)
• A contactless smart card reader/encoder
• IP @SS processor, connected to various databases and watch lists
• Operator and passenger display screens

IP @SS was initially introduced within the framework of a pilot program at London Gatwick International Airport in January 2002. An additional pilot program commenced soon thereafter, in April 2002, at Newark Liberty International Airport, and continues to operate on daily Continental Airlines high risk flights. The Newark IP @SS pilot program was expanded in December 2002 to include round-trip transatlantic flights: Newark - Amsterdam - Newark. This expansion enabled the testing of IP @SS at both airports of departure, providing a more complete picture of its performance. Requirements of regulators in both the USA and the Netherlands are being fully met. In April 2003, an IP @SS pilot program was launched for AA2000 (Aeropuertos Argentina 2000), at Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. AA2000, which operates, maintains, upgrades and expands 33 airports throughout Argentina, is testing IP @SS as an airport-wide passenger control and security solution.

Approximately 100,000 passengers have been processed within the framework of IP @SS pilot programs during the first 18 months of operation, with highly successful results. The pilot trials, which are conducted in stages, enable the testing of alternative technologies and methods, as well as the reaction of the flying public and system operators. Conclusions drawn continue to be implemented, resulting in improved performance and shorter passenger processing times. Additional IP @SS pilot programs are under negotiation.
