RedGuard® in Hazardous Areas

Plant safety and reliability as well as accident prevention are top themes in process plants. Safety measures are top priorities particularly in plants with an increased danger potential, such as for example in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the area of oil and gas, in power stations and in mining. Temperature monitoring is a highly charged issue. Overheating, fires and leakages can cause immense damage. The earlier the risk is recognised and can be localised, the higher the chance of preventing damage to people, machinery and the environment.

The aim of having a monitoring system is its function as an early warning or alarm system. If an abnormal event (leakage/fire) occurs, it should respond immediately, localise the source of the accident and set off an alarm signal. Due to the fact that safety hazards always manifest themselves in a temperature rise, temperature monitoring systems with defined sensor-to-sensor distances are especially suited for providing temperature monitoring over long distances.

The Temperature Monitoring System for Use in Hazardous Areas

The patented RedGuard® temperature monitoring system offers an easy and safe temperature monitoring solution. The system with its defined sensor spacing (2 m, 4 m, 7 m, 10 m, 20 m) makes it possible to measure and locate the temperature precisely and quickly and enables a flexible system design according to each application. The alarm events are generated by means of threshold values – absolute temperature or temperature gradient. Especially the last criteria enables fast, reliable alarms within 15 to 30 seconds depending on the length of the sensor cable.

Application areas are energy tunnels, conveyor belts or LNG terminals. The temperature monitoring system is used here for the detection and localisation of leakages or fires. For temperature sensitive processes the system is used for guarding the product quality by monitoring of temperature limits along a pipe or vessel.

For applications in hazardous areas BARTEC offers a special configuration of the RedGuard® temperature monitoring system. The Ex version conforms to the ATEX directives 94/9/EC and is tested and certified for use in Zone 1 and 21.
