POWER OVER ETHERNET SWITCHES FROM GARRETTCOM EUROPE SUPPORT CLUSTERS OF SURVEILLANCE AND SECURITY DEVICES

GarrettCom Europe has responded to the evolving needs of the video surveillance and access control sectors with the launch of the PES42P hardened Ethernet edge switch. The new device provides connectivity for clusters of surveillance or access control devices, and combines this with fibre optic connectivity to the control network for high-bandwidth transmission of video data.

All this makes the product ideal for applications such as surveillance and security, allowing combinations of up to four cameras and access control devices to be simply connected into the network via a single PES42P switch. Further, the PES42P is one of GarrettCom™s growing range of Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches, supplying power to connected devices and so eliminating the need for costly cabling back to a central power source.

Compact, rugged, and hardened for harsh industrial environments and outdoor use, the PES42P edge switch provides a total of six Ethernet ports. Four ports are always RJ-45 for PoE. The remaining two ports can be user specified as two 100Mb fibre ports, or one fibre and one copper port, or two copper ports.

The ports which supply power feature an auto-sensing algorithm so that they provide power only to attached 802.3af PD devices. If proprietary PoE and non-PoE devices are attached, the auto-sensing feature ensures they will not be damaged. The PES42P ports discontinue supplying power when the PoE devices are disconnected, and support the PSE (Power Sensing Equipment) standard for over-current protection, under-current detection and fault protection.

The PES42P includes Link-Loss-Learn (LLL), enabling it to be used in self-healing and redundant LAN structures. PES42P Switches, combined with managed switches running STP or RSTP or S-Ring, can incorporate PoE devices and can provide high availability redundant LANs at lower total cost than was previously possible.

Mixed media devices such as the PES42P which combine the copper connectivity typical of Ethernet-enabled cameras with fibre connectivity offer effective solutions for traffic control and monitoring applications. GarrettCom pioneered mixed-media modular Ethernet products in 1993, and was the first company to offer the convenience of PoE ports integrated in industrial-grade switches – both managed and unmanaged.
