GEA Wiegand uses waste heat from Biogas plants to produce cold water

Steam jet cooling systems are used for the cooling of water or aqueous solutions in higher temperature ranges and down to the formation of ice. Their functioning and design is simple, and they do not require any maintenance to a large extent. Their capacities range from 10 kW up to approx. 20,000 kW. They are applied for the generation of cold water in the field of air-conditioning and for product cooling in the food industry, chemical industry, synthetic material and pulp industries and for direct product cooling of e.g. moulding sand, colours and crystal slurry.

Steam jet cooling systems are an extremely environmental-friendly alternative of absorption cooling systems, as they only require water or aqueous solutions instead of chemical cooling agents for vacuum operation. For the generation of vacuum, steam jet recompressors are required. In this case, waste heat of 80° C is sufficient as energy source.

Biogas is excellently suited as fuel for combustion engines, which do not only supply mechanical energy but also electricity in connection with a generator and, in addition, waste heat. This waste heat can be used for generating steam and, consequently, for operating a steam jet cooling system.
