Metal detection in pneumatically conveyed breadcrumbs

The Gebrüder Leimer KG in Traunstein / Upper Bavaria is a company with a long tradition that was founded in 1919 by the brothers Carl and Josef Leimer as a bread factory with confectionery. Developed into an internationally important company by Karl Leimer, the company's phi-losophy of "Quality through freshness" right from the start has been the decisive success factor. Flour is obtained from regional mills and is processed into products such as breadcrumbs, croutons, and soup addins, which are manufactured using fully-automatic production lines and are packed on state-of-the-art cartoning and bag-filling machines. Permanent quality control guar-antees the constant high quality of all the products. From the raw material through to the finished product, samples are taken in regular intervals and are examined in the laboratory by certified food experts.

Based on the existing quality management system with integrated HACCP concept, Leimer has obtained a higher-level IFS certificate. Full traceability of each and every production batch from the finished product through to the raw material is guaranteed, and BIO certification completes Leimer's efficiency. To ensure that Leimer's full product range is free of any metal contaminations, Leimer among others uses a metal separator of type GF 4000 made by S+S Separation and Sorting Technology, Schönberg.

The GF 4000 metal separator examines breadcrumbs for magnetic and non-magnetic metal particles (also metal inclusions). The products are transported by way of continuous vacuum conveyance. Contaminations are separated with a minimum loss of good material by way of the fastacting eject flap ("quick-flap system"). The metal separator was installed vertically in the existing vacuum conveyor system, the layout of the conveyor pipes remained unchanged. All system components are designed to meet Leimer's stringent hygiene requirements.

The GENIUS control unit consistently uses the advantages of digital signal processing on multi-frequency basis in optimal cooperation with the detection coil. Due to the local conditions the control unit is detached and installed at a distance of approx. five metres.

As Karlheinz Leimer of Gebrüder Leimer KG sums up: "The S+S metal separator GF 4000 has delivered optimal performance in practice. The system operates with outstanding reliability and accuracy. The great ease of cleaning is another advantage of this metal separator. Altogether we were convinced by the conclusive concept for the food industry that was provided by S+S. For example, the integration in our quality assurance systems was no problem at all. Full traceability and documentation also is guaranteed."
