Even more colourful and versatile

The appearance of the new FT50 C colour sensor of SensoPart Industriesensorik GmbH only slightly differs from the approved original which was awarded the Sensor In-novation Prize. However, with its integrated RS485 interface and additional functions it is even more versatile.

The new FT50 C is able to internally manage five reference colours, which can be both taught-in and scanned – so far only three colours could be managed, and only one of these three could be scanned. Colour selectivity and grey selectivity are now separately selectable, so that the sensor may be adapted much better to the application. But the most important improvement is definitely the integrated RS485 interface, a feature that enables a unique versatility that col-our sensors previously could not offer. Three different versions of FT50 C are realizable:

Colour on request:
The new FT50 C allows to store an unlimited num-ber of reference colours in the control system and to reload them to the sensor when required. In this mode of operation, the required reference colours are first taught and then transferred to the primary control in the form of colour vectors (reference value and toler-ances). Before the process is started, the primary control selects the relevant reference colour and transmits it back to the sensor. The sensor compares the reference with the measured colour value and outputs the signal „Match“ or „No match“ via the switching output. The response time for the recognition of colours is minimal, further-more there is no time needed for a repeated teach-in of new col-ours. „In our opinion, this configuration will be the main future appli-cation of the FT50 C.“, says Jörg Faller, Head of Product Manage-ment Sensors from SensoPart. „Thus we are able to achieve a flexibil-ity and process speed like no other colour sensor on the market.“

Output of the colour channel:
Instead of (or in addition to) the colour value, the FT50 C outputs the channel number of the detected ref-erence colour. Thus up to five differently coloured objects can be distinguished. The control system is not needed for evaluation, be-cause the recognition of colours is effected by the sensor. In this mode of operation, five different objects can be sorted by colour.

Output of the colour value:
The FT50 C outputs the colour value of the measured object via the RS485 interface. This is the standard mode of operation of most colour sensors with analogue interface on the market; its disadvantage is that the comparison with the taught reference must be made by the primary control, resulting in a slowed-down process speed. Its advantage is that in principle the number of colours has no upper limit.

Patented and award-winning

The FT50 not only impresses with its versatility, but also with its techni-cal features. These are the same as those of its award-winning predecessor which is still available. The sensor operates with pulsed white light, enabling a reliable recognition of colours also when scanning distances are variable and even in through-beam mode. Thanks to a special patented lens – the so-called optical funnel – the sensor also offers a unique depth of field, enabling it to detect even moving and vibrating objects in a reliable way.

Configuration and teach-in can be done very easily directly at the sensor or by means of the RS485-interface. With the visible homoge-neous light spot, alignment to the target colour surfaces is no prob-lem. The FT 50 C is still available with three different light spot sizes (diameter about 4 mm, square 2 x 2 mm or rectangular 5 x 1 mm) and therefore particularly versatile.
