RFI641 – the new UHF RFID system for logistics automation

SICK is presenting, at the Hanover Trade Fair 2007, a new powerful RFID system based on UHF for the automation of logistical processes. Up to four antennae can be connected to the RFI641 Radio Frequency Interrogator. As a result of its long range of up to 5 m and its rapid data transfer, the reading point can be set up either from the side of the material flow section, in a gantry above the conveyor system or directly on a loading gate. Its multi-identification and anti-collision features allow a large number of passive transponders to be detected simultaneously en masse. Whereby all data carriers that comply with the EPCGlobal and ISO 18000-6 standards are reliably identified. In transmission terms, the RFI641 is specified for UHF bandwidths (865-868 MHz and 902-928 MHz) permitted in both Europe and the USA.

Whether in production plants, on stationary conveyor systems, or in order-picking areas and distribution centres – the RFI641 is the ideal system solution for detecting trans-ponder-tagged objects in goods flows. The reader, and the antennae, can be easily in-stalled and require little space. Configuration is carried out via a web browser. Applica-tion-specific software is integrated in the reader. In addition to the four antennae sock-ets, the RFI641 has programmable digital inputs, e.g. for a trigger photoelectric switch.

On the output side, the reading device has one Ethernet and one RS-232 data interface, via which the RFID system can be connected to a PLC or higher-ranking SCM or ERP system. It is possible to implement both a filtering of the data and an individual definition of the data output format in the RFI641 for this communication process. The digital switching outputs permit direct process control by means of the RFID system, e.g. the activation of a lock in the material flow, or a signalled setup.

Modular, with a secured future

The RFI641 offers flexible and cost-effective use due to its modular concept. Antennae, connection cable, Ethernet and RS-232 data cables, and transponders can be selected according to the application. In addition, firmware updates are available, making the system adaptable for future developments and thus ensuring a high level of long-term investment protection.
