ThermaCAM™ SC640

FLIR Systems launches the world’s first handheld infrared camera with 640 x 480 pixels uncooled microbolometer detector for R&D applications: ThermaCAM™ SC640

Building on its unmatched expertise in infrared technology, FLIR Systems has introduced a new handheld infrared camera that gives infrared thermography for research and development applications a state-of-the-art tool.

R&D applications in industrial environments

Measurement and imaging equipment for infrared industrial, scientific test and product research and development requires top performing specifications and features. But often, these fine instruments are fix-mounted or at least difficult to handle in the ever-changing research and testing landscape of a modern enterprise. So the capacities go to the detriment of flexibility and mobility of the researcher. To meet the specific needs of the R&D community that appreciates a portable infrared camera, FLIR Systems has developed the ThermaCAM SC640.

The ThermaCAM SC640 is the first handheld infrared camera in the world featuring an uncooled 640 x 480 pixels array microbolometer detector. The crisp 640 x 480 pixels infrared images are fully calibrated for temperature measurement. Individual temperature values can be displayed for each of the more than 300,000 pixels. The camera measures temperatures between -40°C and +500°C (optionally up to +2,000°C).

The 640 x 480 pixels detector provides a four-times higher resolution than a 320 x 240 pixels detector. The result is unrivalled quality infrared images. This offers the researcher the possibility to see more details, use analysis tools with greater accuracy, and to make better and faster decisions. Thanks to these crisp infrared images more thermal anomalies will be detected, resulting in even more time and money savings. Infrared and visual images are stored simultaneously and automatically associated with each other for easy report generation.

The ThermaCAM SC640’s integrated digital camera delivers high quality visual images, with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. Just as for the infrared camera, optional lenses are available to match the field of view of the infrared lens. Infrared and visual images are stored simultaneously and automatically associated with each other for easy report generation. A built-in video light allows shooting clear visual images even in the darkest environments. A laser pointer allows to associate the hot-spot in the infrared image with the real physical target.

The ThermaCAM SC640 is packed into a solid magnesium metal housing, protecting it’s vital inner core against shocks (25G), vibration (2G). The ThermaCAM SC640 is dust- and watersplash proof (IP 54 standard). The SC640’s weight is only 1.7 kg, battery included, making it ideal for go-anywhere use in tough on-site and field conditions.

Big and bright LCD screen integrated in an ergonomic infrared camera

Images – both infrared and visual – are viewed either through the ThermaCAM SC640’s viewfinder or on the super-size, foldable 5.6” color LCD. This bright, large LCD, allows to show images to others. The LCD position can be adjusted for optimum viewing in every situation. It can be entirely folded against the camera when working in tight areas or when the viewfinder is being used. The position of the tiltable viewfinder, with OLED technology, can be adjusted to the thermographer’s needs. It is ideal for outdoor use or when the LCD display is not being used.

A turnable multi-angle handle with integrated joystick and control buttons keeps all vital functions at the operator’s fingertips in every situation. Combined with the tiltable view-finder and the turnable LCD screen, it makes the ThermaCAM SC640 the most ergonomic and flexible handheld infrared camera on the market today.

Unique and time-saving features

The FLIR Systems ThermaCAM SC640 camera is equipped with many smart and time-saving features.

Automatic cold or hot spot detection, Picture-on-Picture (POP) technology, which allows comparing a saved image to an object scanned in real-time directly on the screen, 8x digital zooming as well as panning (select which part of image to zoom) functions. The operator can set a maximum temperature in the camera. If the SC640 is pointed to an object and this temperature is exceeded, the camera will produce an audible and/or visible alarm. Movable spots, line profiling, calculating temperature differences between measurement points directly in the field, isotherms, … It all is standard included in the ThermaCAM SC640.

Especially for the R&D user, the ThermaCAM SC640 incorporates features such as real-time radiometric image storage. Real-time radiometric sequences can be stored on high capacity SD-cards. The operator can choose between automatic or manual focus adjustments, as demanded by FLIR System’s professional customers. Manual focusing is done by turning the lens just as with a conventional camera.

The ThermaCAM SC640 runs more than 3 hours with a single Li-Ion battery. The rechargeable batteries can be charged in the camera or with the help of a 2-bay battery charging system. A 12V charging cable for vehicles is optionally available.

Interfaces and storage

Extensive connectivity features include video output, USB, IrDA and FireWire outputs. This allows for powerful information exchange between the camera and a PC. Video streaming of non radiometric MPEG or radiometric RAW files is optionally available.

Infrared and corresponding visual images are stored in JPEG format on removable SD-cards. For later documentation and analysis, stored images can be accompanied by up to 30 seconds of voice-annotations per image or by freely definable text annotations.

Just as with all its infrared cameras, FLIR Systems supports the ThermaCAM SC640 with a wide range of accessories and optics. Telephoto and wide-angle lenses are available.

Powerful static or real-time infrared analysis

In addition to its powerful measurement capabilities the ThermaCAM SC640 can be combined with the FLIR Systems ThermaCAM Researcher software. This easy-to-use, plug-andplay, software allows for static or real-time image analysis. It contains powerful measurement and analysis functions for fast and extensive temperature analysis including isotherms, line profiles, area histograms, image subtraction capability and many more. All measurement tools allow independent emissivity and distance settings..

“The new ThermaCAM SC640 is an entirely new camera, with a groundbreaking resolution and great features. Moreover, it allows our customers in industrial or academic research and development a lot of mobility and versatility” says Arne Almerfors, FLIR Systems Thermography Division President. “FLIR Systems is proud to present the ThermaCAM SC 640. With its extremely high image quality the ThermaCAM SC640 will become the benchmark portable infrared camera for professional R&D use. Having resolutely expanded the market for infrared thermography with the InfraCAM introduction earlier this year, FLIR Systems is today setting new standards for high-end infrared cameras for R&D applications.”
